Durham County Sheriff’s Department, 1982
Roland W. Leary was sheriff when this photograph of deputies and support staff was taken shortly after the office’s centennial anniversary in 1981. At this time each deputy acted in every capacity, handling all civil and criminal matters that fell under the office’s jurisdiction. They ran the jail, issued warrants, made arrests, patrolled, worked in the courts, and provided community service. Today the department is divided into four main divisions, Administration, Operations, Adult Services, and Detention Services, working in many specialized areas including animal services, community resources and services, domestic violence, criminal investigation, and patrol.
